CHILD PORN ADDICTION 7

Simon Jarvis, 53, was found with almost 2,000 illegal images on various computers and in online accounts when his city home and college room were raided by the National Crime Agency in September.

The abuse images, which included one of a baby, were discovered on four computers seized during the raid.

Other images showed ‘pubescent and pre-pubescent’ girls as young as 10 being sexually abused.

Of the almost 2,000 indecent images found, 45 were in the most serious Category A.

Cambridge Crown Court heard how ‘Yahoo chat logs’ containing ‘extremely graphic’ child abuse fantasies and software allowing access to the ‘Dark Web’ were also found.
He also posed pictures at the lower category C on a page on the Tumblr website under a pseudonym, the court heard.
The court heard while the oldest charged related to material from 2011 he admitted to NCA officers to viewing child abuse material online since 2000.
After his arrest he told investigators he had sexual fantasies about young girls, sometimes as young as four.
Jarvis pleaded guilty to four charges of making and two of distributing indecent images of children, five charges of possessing prohibited images and one of possessing extreme pornography, at Friday’s hearing.
Claire Matthews, defending Jarvis, told the court the academic had been battling ‘demons’ and being caught had come as something of a ‘release’.
She said: ‘He has mental health issues. He is a bright, intelligent and educated man who knows what he was doing was incredibly wrong. He experienced complete shame throughout.’
He was sentenced to 12 months, suspended for two years, with a 10-year sexual harm prevention order and must pay £670 prosecution costs.
Sentencing him, Judge David Farrell QC said: ‘You are an intelligent man, a professor of English literature at the University of Cambridge.
‘As such, in my judgment, you must have know that by accessing and viewing indecent images of children you were indirectly encouraging the abuse of children.
‘You were looking at these images for your own perverted sexual gratification.’
But, the judge added, Jarvis had been open with police about ‘what has been described as having an addiction to porn that progressed and included indecent images of children’.
He said Jarvis posed a ‘low to moderate risk’ to children and had taken steps since his arrest to get help, and would receive better treatment and rehabilitation if he was not immediately jailed.
After the hearing, a university spokeswoman said: ‘We can confirm that Jarvis has been suspended from his post, pending the outcome of an internal investigation.
‘We continue to offer support to anyone who has concerns about the case.’
Martin Ludlow, from the National Crime Agency’s child exploitation and online protection command, said: ‘Whilst there is no evidence to suggest there has been any contact abuse by Jarvis, every image in his possession was created as a result of a child being sexually abused.’
Jarvis was also ordered to do up to 40 days of rehabilitation with the probation service and to comply with notification requirement with the police and the National Crime Agency for ten years.
His access to the internet, electrical devices and contact with anyone under 18 was banned except with police or parental consent.

Pervert John McConnell has been sent to prison after being caught with thousands of child abuse images.
Police arrested the 53-year-old 'porn addict' after seizing a computer from his Brown Lees home.
Officers discovered 6,691 indecent images and movies of children which had been downloaded over a four years.
Now the defendant, of Lyndhurst Drive, has been jailed for 10 months at Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court.
David Bennett, prosecuting, said a search of McConnell's home was carried out on September 15 last year.
He added: "Police found 1,630 category A – the most serious – still and moving images; 521 still and moving category B images and 4,540 category C still and moving images involving children and infants.
"There was also relevant search history found for indecent images of children.
"The defendant was interviewed and he accepted viewing babies up to 16 years of age. However he denied distributing them."
The court heard the images had been downloaded between August 2012 and September 2016.
The defendant – who had no previous convictions – went on to plead guilty to three charges of making indecent photographs of children.
Andrew Turnock, mitigating, said that from the moment officers arrested him, McConnell had been 'fully frank'.
He said: "There is awareness of the impact of the victims and he is capable of showing some victim empathy.
"He doesn't consider himself to be a risk to children in the community and he doesn't seek to minimise the seriousness of his offending."
Mr Turnock said that prison was a 'daunting prospect' for someone of McConnell's age.
He added: "It's clear that his addiction to this type of porn is entrenched. He is a man who has been socially and emotionally isolated for many years, having his first relationship aged 38.
"He knows and acknowledges this offending is serious. He is a man who does know how to work but when he returns home he is drifted into temptation."
Sentencing McConnell, Judge Paul Glenn, said: "You're 53-years-old with previous good character.
"There is a large amount of category A material, and you have been accessing this material for years. Some are very young indeed, some are babies and toddlers.
"You describe yourself as an avid downloader of porn but you claim to have no sexual interest in children – I don't accept that.
"You organised your collection into folders and I don't share the view that you are of no risk to children.
"What you don't seem to appreciate is that these are real children being abused for the entertainment of people like you."
McConnell was also made the subject of a 10-year sexual harm prevention order barring him from a range of activities involving children and vulnerable adults.

An Ashley Down man who admitted getting sexual kicks from “abhorrent” images of child rape has been spared immediate jail.
Bristol Crown Court heard Edwin Sterry had a dark attraction to indecent stills and videos of youngsters, and collected a sordid stash of girls as young as five being abused.
Sterry, 29, of Osborne Avenue, pleaded guilty to six charges of making indecent images of a child between February 2011 and February 2015.
His sorry collection included 129 images of the worst harm - Category A - and some 1,591 images in the lowest harm, Category C.
Judge David Evans handed him a 12 months jail term, suspended for 18 months.
He told Sterry: “It is clear that from your teenage years you have had a sexual interest in sexual images of children.
“When the police came calling on the basis of intelligence they received they were to discover that you had been downloading onto a laptop such images.
They were absolutely abhorrent.
They included video-recorded footage of pre-pubescent girls, who are in clear distress, being raped.”
Sterry was ordered to undergo sex offender treatment and told to do 150 hours’ unpaid work.
He was also made the subject of a Sexual Harm Prevention Order, banning him from unchecked internet use, told to register as a sex offender for five years and had his laptop computer forfeited.
Mark Hollier, prosecuting, told the court: “Such is the volume of work and the lack of resources in the (police’s) high tech crime unit there is a great delay in processing cases of this nature.
“There was an investigation when it was found that an IP address in Bristol was accessing indecent images of children.”
The court heard police visited Sterry and discovered his laptop contained child abuse images.
He was arrested and declined to answer questions.
When the full extent of his indecent photos were established he declined to answer questions again.
Peter Binder, defending, said his client was supported by his partner, brother, step-father and mother.
He said: “They speak of their shock and have given continued love and support.”
Mr Binder said his client had voluntarily undergone work with the Lucy Faithfull Foundation, the UK’s only charity dedicated to preventing child sexual abuse.
Sterry was “willing and anxious” to engage in such work, the court heard.
A LONER obsessed with UFOs, aliens and child sex abuse has avoided jail despite being caught with a stash of more than 10,000 images.
Welder Simon Hermes suffered terrible misfortune in his life so withdrew from society into his own fantasy world.
Tragically for young children this included downloading hundreds of the most vile and horrific images.
The 48-year-old’s house was raided in June last year by police. They found eight hard drives, five of which contained child abuse images.
Hermes admitted three counts of downloading indecent images at Chelmsford Crown Court earlier this year. He was sentenced yesterday, by Judge David Turner QC, having been caught with 531 images at the highest category A.
He also had 10,405 in category B and 468 in category C.
The court heard Hermes, of High Street, Braintree, suffers from recurrent depressive disorder and has repeatedly taken overdoses to try to end his own life.
Six years ago his mother died of breast cancer and his partner is believed to have killed herself due to illness.
Judge David Turner said: “The court faces a dilemma when coming to sentence men like you. You have sufficient understanding and intelligence to recognise these are by no means victimless crimes.
“Every single one of these children featured in the images you have been looking at for a number of years are someone’s daughter or son.
“Often the lives of these children are permanently damaged.
“There will have to be a prison sentence. The only question is whether it is suspended.”
He continued: “You possess some strange views and obsessions not related to sex and there is no doubt at all you have led an isolated life.
“You are very obviously psychologically if not psychiatrically vulnerable."
Hermes was jailed for 14 months to be served concurrently on each count suspended for two years.
He will have to carry out 180 hours unpaid work, 20 rehabilitation activity requirement days with a five year sexual harm prevention order limiting his use of the internet.
He will also be on the sex offenders’ register for a decade.
